NEWS FROM THE MERIDEN SOUP KITCHEN
Last May when the National Association of Letter Carriers had their annual food drive around Mother’s Day we at the Meriden Soup Kitchen thought for sure we would see a decline in donations. But again the generosity of the people of Meriden showed and we received ample amounts of food to sustain us
However, as we look at our pantry and see the amount of food dwindling as we serve more meals than we usually do we are asking the citizens of Meriden to help us again. In the past we have benefited from schools in Meriden, civic organizations, churches and most of all from individuals.
Our TEN MOST WANTED LIST follows:
Tuna Fish
Canned whole Potatoes
Broth
Soups
Spaghettis Sauce and Cheese Sauce
Canned Chicken and Canned Ham
Canned Vegetables and Fruits
(cut string beans, creamed corn and plain corn
As well as assorted vegetables)
Canned Beef Stew and Hash
Coffee
Juices
?
Thanks you for your continued support and generosity We are proud to have served almost 23,500 meals through August of 2009. We are proud of the over 150 volunteers who show up faith fully to prepare these meals. And we are grateful to the First Baptist Church allow us to use their facility.
Non-perishable food items may best be delivered to the MSK between 8am and 11am Monday through Friday. The MSK is located in the First Baptist Church, 460 Broad Street Access is a driveway from East Main Street between Safe-T Auto and enter Congregational Church.

Traveling back to the 1950s at MidState’s Swing and Sway Gala
MidState Medical Center’s October 10th Swing and Sway Gala at the Aqua Turf gave everyone who attended a chance to step into a time machine and travel back to the good old 1950s. Between the pink Cadillac centerpieces, bright-colored hula hoops, retro fashions and rock-and-roll music, the scene was set for an old fashioned “Jackie O” inspired affair.
People did the hand jive to the Nifty Fifties band and danced the night away to DJ Rico, while they feasted on a selection of hors d'oeuvres, sushi, a “potini” bar and beef tenderloin. The silent auction featured 52 items that included tickets to Yankees and Red Sox games next season, golf outings and vacations. Three large baskets were also up for grabs: a $500 gift certificate to local restaurants, $700-worth of Stop & Shop gift cards, and a Nintendo Wii gaming system complete with accessories.
“Thank you for being here with us tonight. What we’ve done in the last two years is amazing,” said Lucille Janatka, President & CEO, highlighting the recent opening of two new buildings in Wallingford and Meriden. “But it’s more than just bricks and mortar,” she continued. “What we truly celebrate tonight are the wonderful people who give excellent care.”
In total, nearly 400 people were celebrating at the gala. "We have a wonderful turnout, and we're gratified by that," said Auxiliary President, Geraldine Meoni.
“It's wonderful to have a tradition that we've developed by bringing everybody together in a different setting than the hospital," added Lawrence McGoldrick, Chairman of the Board of Directors.
All of the proceeds from the Swing and Sway Gala benefit MidState Medical Center programs and services.

In tough times, business success requires more than money
By Maura Casey
In the middle of the worst recession in decades, businesses need help just to keep their doors open. Yet the difference between companies that survive and those that thrive frequently involves more than money. Often it involves whether or not the owner gets the right support, not just the right loan, but wise accounting and marketing advice, too.
That’s where the Community Economic Development Fund (CEDF) comes in. Located right here in Meriden, the nonprofit CEDF has lent money to small businesses since 1994, many of them owned by women and minorities. Along the way, the organization has helped create more than 3,500 jobs. Many of the businesses to which the organization lends money can’t get conventional loans. Sometimes owners have less-than-perfect credit, or banks believe they don’t have enough experience to run a business successfully.
CEDF doesn’t shy away from such challenges. Instead, it asks a central question: What do owners need to become successful? Even in the middle of this financial crisis, CEDF is lending hundreds of thousands to small companies because banks around the state have invested money in CEDF, creating a loan pool. The pool forms the major source of CEDF”s business loans. The state provides some limited matching funds, too.
But CEDF doesn’t just lend businesses money and walk away. Lending money is just the start of the process. The organization surrounds business owners with support. A cadre of volunteer accountants helps business owners who need it. Companies who need assistance with publicity get marketing advice, too. After obtaining a CEDF loan, business owners have regular one-on-one meetings with counselors who make sure that they are not just surviving, but thriving, or at least, on the way to doing so.
It makes a huge difference in navigating difficult times. And it helps owners achieve their dreams. Like the body-builder turned entrepreneur who opened his own gym in Stamford. Or the flower shop owner in Plainfield. Or a man in Norwalk who designs and manufactures high-end tool bags for tradesmen. They all had dreams, and came to CEDF to help them achieve their goals. It makes the organization proud.
A few times a year, CEDF offers its own clients and other business owners training at six locations around the state, including Meriden -- for those who wish to gain a better understanding of taxes, accounting, and financial issues. CEDF offers most of its clients a reduction in their interest rates provided they get training. But for anyone, the courses are both thorough and inexpensive
.
The courses which will take place at CEDF headquarters here at 965 East Main St., are as follows:
-- A four-night course in Quickbooks, the easy-to-use financial accounting software that runs on Oct. 6, 8, 13 and 15 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and taught by Dennis Gruell. Cost ranges from $115 to $150, and includes a copy of the software, a $199 value. Note: the prerequisite for this course is a course called, Understanding Business Finances which took place in September.
-- A two-night course called, Tax Related Issues for Small Business, held at 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 26 and 28.The course will be taught by Rick Merrick, CPA, and ranges in cost from $15 to $25.
For questions on borrowing money or just getting some services for your existing small business, please call Rina Bakalar at 203-235-2333 ext. 2040. Or visit the CEDF website at www.cedf.com.

Stephen J. Harper to Speak at Temple Beth David
On Sunday, November 15, at 7:00 p.m., Stephen J. Harper, author of Straddling Worlds: The Jewish-American Journey of Professor Richard W. Leopold, will speak at Temple Beth David of Cheshire as part of its TBD Connections Guest Authors Series. He will tell the story of secular American Jews in the first half of the twentieth century as illustrated by two lives, that of his father-in law and of a famed Harvard and Northwestern history professor, Richard W. Leopold.
Stephen J. Harper met every Sunday morning with professor Leopold, his mentor and former teacher, when the professor was in his nineties and confined to a wheelchair. At first they planned to formulate the professor’s obituary, but the journey took them to places neither expected. Bringing in the story of Harper’s own father-in-law, they explored both men’s lives from their Ivy League educations to their triumph over anti-Semitism, from their service in World War II to their post-war professional achievements, a Jewish-American experience rarely shared in such intimate detail.
Harper, an adjunct professor at Northwestern University’s School of Law and respected former litigator, is also the author of the critical acclaimed Crossing Hofstra: A Teamster’s Story.
The event is free and open to the public. Please join us in the social hall of the synagogue, 3 Main Street, Cheshire, for a rewarding evening. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call Michael Rutberg at (203) 272-6096.
