Meriden Wallingford Community Events and News October 2009
Gallery 53- Arts and Crafts Assoc. of Meriden
Gallery 53 has opened its doors to a broader dimension of the Arts and Culture. We have encouraged and invited a variety of interesting and talented people to share their particular skills with us.
An appreciative audience of over a hundred enjoyed Nancy Boyton’s poetry reading and her husband Dick Boyton’s first paintings. There is now a new feature, (member), artists whose work is on public display exhibited free and for sale as a means to support artists.
Our workshop and classes have been extended to include hours for working people and weekend hours for children also. Sundays from 1-3pm has been one of our newer openings and this schedule has been well received.
Visit our Gallery 53, join as members, take our many classes or become a volunteer in this place of exciting activities and inspiration. Call Director Rita Sarris at 203-235-5347 for information.

IS JOINING A SKI CLUB FOR YOU?
Meriden Ski Club
Most folks who ski or board know that there are ski clubs in the area. They have also wondered, from time to time, if they should join one or at least look into what they offer their members.
The Meriden Ski Club has been around for 48 years, open to all, offering an organization that ski and snowboard enthusiast can join and enjoy the many benefits that a ski club offers. Close to 1,000 skiers and boarders coming from all walks of life and of all ages are members. By becoming a member you can pick and choose what activities of benefits you want to partake in. It could be the comradeship of other skiers and boarders. Have others to ski and board with by joining us on our various ski trips. You may not want to drive long distances to a ski area. The club offers bus trips that take you. No more driving home after a long day on the slopes and no more spending money for expensive gasoline. You may want to go on a week long ski vacation. For members who choose this avenue we offer trips out west or to Europe. The club makes all the arrangements. All you have to do is become a member, sign up, pay the fee and go.
If you have children, they are welcome. Any child under 18 years old automatically becomes a member when a parent joins. We offer ski or snowboard instruction for our members and children are welcome to join in.
We offer social events for the whole family. A Christmas party, miniature golf outing, racing and other events when children are welcome with an adult parent.
All of us who ski or board know how escalating coast have put a damper on our activities. We try to make skiing more affordable by offering discount tickets. We buy tickets at a bulk rate from Mt. Southington and discount them to our members. We have teamed up with the Connecticut Ski Council to purchase discounted tickets to areas like Stratton, Mt. Snow, Sugarbush, Okemo, Ascutney, Bromley and Stow at savings up to 60%. The cost of skiing at these major areas is now well within our financial means.
If you are into ski racing we also offer a program for that. Each year we have an inter club race. We have classes for both kids and adult members. Winners are awarded trophies at our annual club banquet. We have a club sponsored race team that races with other teams from the Connecticut Ski Council. This program is open to all adult skiers who race against others of the same age and gender. We meet at Mt. Southington on Monday nights. Those who race have the race cost reimbursed to them at the end of the season. As a member of the Meriden Ski Club you can also partake in races conducted by the CSC.
For those of you along with skiing are looking for social events we also offer them. We meet weekly at the AOH hall in south Meriden. We have a ski movie night, holiday party, spaghetti dinner, annual banquet, golf tournament, summer picnic and other summer outings.
I’ll ask the question again; “Is joining a ski club for you?” There is only one way to find out. Stop by our Open House on Oct. 29 at 7 PM at the AOH hall, 71 Melville Ave., South Meriden. All programs offer morning and afternoon snack, time for homework with staff assistance, indoor and outdoor games, as well as crafts and other activities. All sites participate in a monthly community service project.

Morning and afternoon snacks are offered, as well as a variety of quiet and active games, arts and crafts, field trips, and special events. The Monsignor Slocum Division Number 1
The AOH is a Catholic, Irish American fraternal organization founded in 1836 in New York City. The AOH can trace its roots back to a parent organization of the same name, which has existed for more than 300 years in Ireland.
However, the North American AOH is a separate and much larger organization, according to a history on the Monsignor Slocum Division 1 Web site at http://msgrslocumdiv1.com/.
Waterbury, Conn., has drawn a steady stream of Irish immigrants from its earliest history as a city. By 1879 a division of the AOH met regularly on the first and third Tuesdays of each month.
By 1888, the history states, the First Division met in the Grand Army Hall, the Second Division at Dougherty’s Block, and the Third Division assembled at the Knights of Columbus Hall.
The organization continued to grow and by 1894 five divisions were meeting in Waterbury and two Ladies’ Auxiliary Divisions were formed within a few years.
When Monsignor William Slocum, rector of the Immaculate Conception and benefactor for all Waterbury Catholic institutions, died unexpectedly in 1907, the Second, Third and Fifth Division consolidated into the Monsignor Slocum Division.
The Ancient Order of Hibernians of the United States granted a formal charter to the Monsignor Slocum Division Number 1 on March 14, 1909. The division is named after the priest as he was instrumental in purchasing the land for St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury. He also gave $20,000 in his will to open the hospital’s building fund.
Today, the Monsignor Slocum Division Number 1, Ancient Order of Hibernians, meets at 91 Golden Hill St., Waterbury.
The AOH remains the premier men’s organization for Irish heritage and culture in the city and supports Catholic education of high school and collage-age students with scholarships.
The organization also assists throughout the community with services for the ill, veterans and sports teams.

In tough times, business success requires more than money
By Maura Casey
In the middle of the worst recession in decades, businesses need help just to keep their doors open. Yet the difference between companies that survive and those that thrive frequently involves more than money. Often it involves whether or not the owner gets the right support, not just the right loan, but wise accounting and marketing advice, too.
That’s where the Community Economic Development Fund (CEDF) comes in. Located right here in Meriden, the nonprofit CEDF has lent money to small businesses since 1994, many of them owned by women and minorities. Along the way, the organization has helped create more than 3,500 jobs. Many of the businesses to which the organization lends money can’t get conventional loans. Sometimes owners have less-than-perfect credit, or banks believe they don’t have enough experience to run a business successfully.
CEDF doesn’t shy away from such challenges. Instead, it asks a central question: What do owners need to become successful? Even in the middle of this financial crisis, CEDF is lending hundreds of thousands to small companies because banks around the state have invested money in CEDF, creating a loan pool. The pool forms the major source of CEDF”s business loans. The state provides some limited matching funds, too.
But CEDF doesn’t just lend businesses money and walk away. Lending money is just the start of the process. The organization surrounds business owners with support. A cadre of volunteer accountants helps business owners who need it. Companies who need assistance with publicity get marketing advice, too. After obtaining a CEDF loan, business owners have regular one-on-one meetings with counselors who make sure that they are not just surviving, but thriving, or at least, on the way to doing so.
It makes a huge difference in navigating difficult times. And it helps owners achieve their dreams. Like the body-builder turned entrepreneur who opened his own gym in Stamford. Or the flower shop owner in Plainfield. Or a man in Norwalk who designs and manufactures high-end tool bags for tradesmen. They all had dreams, and came to CEDF to help them achieve their goals. It makes the organization proud.
A few times a year, CEDF offers its own clients and other business owners training at six locations around the state, including Meriden -- for those who wish to gain a better understanding of taxes, accounting, and financial issues. CEDF offers most of its clients a reduction in their interest rates provided they get training. But for anyone, the courses are both thorough and inexpensive
.
The courses which will take place at CEDF headquarters here at 965 East Main St., are as follows:
-- A four-night course in Quickbooks, the easy-to-use financial accounting software that runs on Oct. 6, 8, 13 and 15 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and taught by Dennis Gruell. Cost ranges from $115 to $150, and includes a copy of the software, a $199 value. Note: the prerequisite for this course is a course called, Understanding Business Finances which took place in September.
-- A two-night course called, Tax Related Issues for Small Business, held at 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 26 and 28.The course will be taught by Rick Merrick, CPA, and ranges in cost from $15 to $25.
For questions on borrowing money or just getting some services for your existing small business, please call Rina Bakalar at 203-235-2333 ext. 2040. Or visit the CEDF website at http://www.cedf.com/.

SOFT TOUCH VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT MIDSTATE
Trained volunteers at MidState Medical Center provide “Soft Touch” relaxation rubs for patients. This is a free service provided by volunteers who are trained by a licensed massage therapist in the technique of therapeutic relaxation rubs. The volunteer provides these soothing relaxation “rubs” to patients’ hands and feet.
Research shows that “Soft Touch” aids in the healing process by increasing circulation, relieving a patient’s anxiety, increasing endorphins, and just simply feels good! This program is rated extraordinarily high on patient satisfaction surveys.
Additional volunteers are needed to meet the high volume of patient requests for this service. Those interested in becoming a “Soft Touch Volunteer”, are asked to call Diamond Belejack, Manager of Volunteer Services at 694-8572. Prospective volunteers must complete an application process, have a personal interview, and attend all four mandatory two-hour “soft touch” training evening sessions in October .

MYSTIC AQUARIUM & INSTITUTE FOR EXPLORATION REVEALS SEA LION PUPS’ NEW NAMES
Names selected by celebrity judges and the public during contest; announced during pups first birthday celebrations today
MYSTIC, Conn. (August 27, 2009) — Today was a big day for the three new California sea lion pups at Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration. In addition to celebrating their first birthday – complete with an icy fish treat for them and cake for guests – the pups received their highly anticipated names: Jetty for the male and Cali and Sakari for the two females. Celebrity judges Miss Connecticut 2009 Sharalynn Kuziak, UConn Men’s Basketball Coach Jim Calhoun and Teresa Labarbera (standing in for WFSB-TV meteorologist and “Better Connecticut” co-host Scot Haney) were in attendance and revealed the pups’ new names to guests.
Throughout August, name ideas were submitted and voted upon by more than 2,000 people in 36 states during a public naming contest. The contest kicked off on July 28 and consisted of several parts. First, the public submitted name ideas through the aquarium’s Web site, mysticaquarium.org, through August 12. From these suggestions, the aquarium’s animal care staff and celebrity judges chose five finalist names for each pup. During the final phase, the public returned to the Web site to vote for their favorite names.
“Because we rely so much on the public’s support, it was only natural that we engage them in naming our special new residents,” said Dr. Stephen Coan, president and CEO of Sea Research Foundation, Inc. “The name ideas we received were extremely creative and thoughtful, and we were happy to see that contest participants considered these pups’ stories when submitting names. The contest provided a great opportunity to remind everyone of the important animal rescue and rehabilitation work that we and other aquariums do on a regular basis.”
Jetty was found with pneumonia and rescued in Morro Bay Harbor in San Luis Obispo County, California, while Cali and Sakari come from SeaWorld San Diego’s Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Program. All three were rescued at approximately six months of age and treated for malnourishment and dehydration. They recovered well and were brought to Mystic for enhancement of the species.
The name Jetty was selected by the judging panel for its symbolism. A jetty protects the coastline from the effects of currents and tides, just as this pup is protecting his relatives in the wild by educating aquarium guests about sea lions. Sakari, an Inuit word for “sweet,” matches the more submissive female pup’s personality well. Cali was chosen by the judges as a finalist name, because it reflected their origin.
The pups will remain permanent residents of the aquarium. Currently, they are housed in the Aquatic Animal Study Center, which can be viewed from the Gurdon and Kathy Wattles Marine Mammal Observatory. Jetty will eventually join the other California sea lions in the aquarium’s daily sea lion shows, and Cali and Sakari will join the Steller sea lions and harbor seal in the Pribilof Islands exhibit.
Visit mysticaquarium.org to learn more about these pups and see the complete contest results.

Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration to Host
5k Run or Walk (or Waddle!) to
Benefit Penguin Research and Conservation
Event includes middle school team and new fundraising team competitions;
dogs welcome to participate in walk for first time
MYSTIC, Conn. (September 30, 2009) – Lace up your sneakers and get ready to run or walk for the good of our feathered friends. Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration will hold a 5k run and two-mile walk at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 17 to benefit our much-loved African penguins. For the first time ever, dogs are welcome to join their families in the two-mile walk.
The event consists of a 5k run on a trail, field and road course, two-mile walk and ¼-mile kids’ race. Prizes will be awarded in eight age divisions for males and females. Participants who raise $50 or more will receive a free commemorative race T-shirt. The top individual fundraiser will be awarded an original piece of art created by the penguins, and the runner-up will receive a free Penguin Encounter, during which he/she will interact face-to-face with a penguin. The top fundraising team (consisting of up to 10 runners and/or walkers) will receive a penguin Encounter Program and will be recognized on a plaque that will hang at the Aquarium.
The event also includes a middle school cross-country team competition. The winning team will receive an engraved trophy that will be passed to each year’s winning team. Each of the members on the middle school winning team will also receive a meet-and-greet with a penguin. Medals will go to the second and third place teams.
All participants will receive free admission on race day to Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration, where they can visit the 27 African penguins in the Roger Tory Peterson Penguin Exhibit and see more than 70 other exhibits featuring more than 4,900 fish, invertebrates and marine mammals from around the world.
The money raised will help the penguins at the aquarium and across the world. Over the last eight years, the world’s African penguin population has decreased by 42 percent. The penguins at the aquarium play an integral role in the African Penguin Species Survival Plan, and the aquarium staff’s work with them is helping researchers better understand penguins in the wild. In fact, the aquarium is a leader in a collaborative, nationwide effort to assist researchers in South Africa. Staff are examining all factors possibly affecting the penguins and developing a plan for the aquarium to lead and assist with education, research and conservation efforts of the species.
WBMW-FM (106.5) is a sponsor of the 3rd annual Penguin Run/Walk. Our Companions Domestic Animal Sanctuary volunteers will watch dogs during the portion of the walk that takes place inside the aquarium.
