Mayor's Corner Meriden
Favorite Childhood memory
I grew up in a suburb of Rochester, NY near Irondequoit Bay which fed into Lake Ontario. My childhood was spent playing sports with my friends, and fishing and boating in Irondequoite Bay. Back in those days, it was common for us to leave the house early in the morning for our daily adventures and not return until supper. We never missed supper!
One day, my younger brother and I were exploring a creek along the bay and we came upon an old rowboat adrift in the weeds. What a find! We located some oars and spent many hours fishing and bow fishing for carp and garpike. Although the old boat was barely seaworthy, that didn't stop us from exploring every inch of the bay and her many inlets. We were a modern day Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn as my brother and I looked forward to our forays on the bay. There's something very tranquil about bobbing in a rowboat on the glistening waters of a bay with sea gulls overhead, fish splashing, and puffy clouds lazily crossing a blue sky. Yes, we had it made!
But all good things must come to an end. One day when we went to get our boat, it was missing. When we first found the boat, we had assumed that it had been abandoned due to its poor condition. This was a bad assumption. As we came to find out, the boat actually had an owner on the other side of the bay. The boat came loose from its mooring and drifted several miles to where we had found it. He had been looking for his boat and reclaimed it. So this marked the end of our boating days on the bay until years later when my dad bought a motor boat for the family. But I will never forget those boyhood adventures with our rowboat.
As I think back on those days, I feel sadness for a bygone era. How many parents today would or could let their young children loose for the day to paddle around a bay in an old rowboat? All of us are now consumed with children's safety for a host of real and imagined threats. Not that this is wrong or bad but it does foreclose any chance for the children of today to experience the carefree days of old that my brother and I enjoyed growing up.
Enjoy the beautiful days of summer.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT PENSION WITHHOLDING
Pensioners do not qualify for the Making Work Pay Credit unless they have earned income. However, the new withholding tables apply to all taxpayers, including pensioners. The withholding tables decreased Federal Tax withholdings on pensions, too. If you receive a pension, you may want to contact your accountant, tax preparer, go to your local IRS Office or use the IRS.Gov for help. The IRS has a withholding calculator that pensioners and others can use to make sure enough tax is being withheld from their pay.
