FREE PHOTO ORGANIZATIONAL CLASS AT MERIDEN PUBLIC LIBRARY RESCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 17

Thinking someday you’ll organize your pictures. Your someday is here. For those of you who still have piles and packages and boxes of pictures and can’t think of doing photo albums until you are organized, this is for you! Come join Creative Memories Consultant Kitt Dunk who has completed over 20 albums using this method. She is very anxious to share this information with you during this free class on Monday, August 17 at 5:00 p.m. in the Friends Room of Meriden Public Library. MEDICATION MANAGEMENT” PROGRAM AUGUST 24 AT MERIDEN PUBLIC LIBRARY

A program on “Medication Management” presented by Donna Jones RN, from Midstate Medical Center, will be held at Meriden Public Library on Monday, August 24 at 6:30 pm in the Griffin Room. More than 50% of Americans take a daily prescription medication. Ms. Jones will speak on drug interactions and herbal remedies as well as general tips for managing your medications. NANNY DIARIES AUTHORS AT MERIDEN PUBLIC LIBRARY AUGUST 18

Come to Meriden Public Library on Tuesday, August 18 at 1:30 pm in the Griffin room to meet Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Krauss, the authors of the Nanny Diaries, as they introduce their newest book for teens, The Real Real. Ms. McLaughlin and Ms. Krauss will discuss their newest book and their experiences as writers. Both authors will be signing copies of their books at the end of the event. FREE TEEN MOVIES IN AUGUST AT MERIDEN PUBLIC LIBRARY

Meriden Public Library will be showing two movies in August for teens. The second movie will be the new movie starring Hannah Montana on Tuesday, August 25 at 2:00 pm. Both movies will be shown in the Griffin Room on the big screen. Popcorn will be provided. Bring your friends and enjoy a free movie. CAREER EXPRESS BUS COMES TO MERIDEN LIBRARY AUGUST 5

The CT Works Career Express Bus will be at Meriden Public Library on Wednesday, August 5 from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm. The Career Express Bus is equipped with 8 computers and provides services to unemployed individuals and people looking for a career change. It is staffed by trained professionals who will assist with resume writing, job seeking strategies, interview techniques, and career exploration. The bus will be parked in front of the library on Miller Street.

TEEN BOOKMARK CONTEST AT MERIDEN PUBLIC LIBRARY

Do you like to draw? Meriden Public Library is holding a design a bookmark contest for children in grades 6 through 12. The entry forms are available at the library and the deadline for the entries is August 21, 2009. The bookmarks should be reading or library related. For example, it could be a picture representing a favorite author or story, an activity or program they enjoy when they come to the library, or just encouraging everyone to read. All entries must be drawn in a black felt tip pen or marker as the winning bookmarks will be reproduced on colored paper. There will be one winning design from each grade level chosen by the Library Board at their August board meeting. Copies of the winning bookmarks will be available at the library for one year.

SCRABBLE AT MERIDEN LIBRARY

WRITERS NETWORK MEETS IN AUGUST AT MERIDEN LIBRARY

Meriden Public Library will host a Writers Network group on Wednesday, August 12 and August 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the Friends Room. We invite anyone who is serious about writing fiction or nonfiction, wants to learn the process of getting published, or needs support for writing a book proposal or query letter to attend. The Writers Network is for anyone who is looking for a support network to keep the motivation going, is interested in sharing their writing with others and is longing for the camaraderie of others who share a passion for writing.

The group will be run by Roberta Dolan, a Meriden resident who is trained in group facilitation and is in the process of writing her first book. The Writers Network group will meet twice a month and will occasionally invite editors, published authors and people versed in the publishing process to speak to the group.

Whether you are planning to travel to the far corners of the Earth or to the corner of your backyard, we can help you get the most from your summer vacation.

Continuing through August and concluding September 3rd, entries will be accepted for the Adult Summer Reading Program. Your entry gives you the chance to win a WPL Summer Book Bag containing a selection of books that are yours to keep and enjoy. We’ve also thrown in a few necessary summer supplies! Each week our Book Bag giveaway will feature a different selection of books and summer essentials.

Read a book or listen to the audio version and enter to win a Summer Book Bag. You need not be present to win. Stop by the Information Desk to pick up a Summer Reading log entry or download and print a copy now.

Contest Rules:
· Read books or listen to audio books between July 1 and September 3.
· For each book read or listened to, write the title, author, and a sentence or two describing the book on the entry form. Include your name and contact information.
· Turn in your entry form to the Information Desk to earn a chance to win a Book Bag. There will be a drawing every Thursday of each week, beginning July 9th and concluding on September 3rd.

Book to Movie Matinees!

Join us for a film based on a book and travel out of Wallingford to an exotic location without ever leaving the library! All films begin at 2:00 p.m. in the library’s Community Room. All are welcome to these free movie events. Dates and titles as follows:

August 19: A PASSAGE TO INDIA

Based on the novel by E.M. Forster and the play by Santha Rama Rau. While on a trip in 1928 to visit her son, Mrs. Moore, accompanied by her son's fiancee, is appalled at the treatment of the Indians by the ruling British government. Wallingford Public Library Offers JobNow

Wallingford, CT- July 30, 2009 – The Wallingford Public Library is pleased to announce a new online free service called JobNow. This new service offers online access to free expert job coaching and resume review. Library patrons can access JobNow from the public computers in the library or from home, and connect to a trained job coach for assistance in their job search process. The JobNow service offers personality assessments for patrons just beginning their job search as well as resume and cover letter templates and examples, live interview practice, online resources, local job search websites, and more. Patrons can link to JobNow from the library’s website, http://www.wallingford.lioininc.org/ and login with their Wallingford Public Library Card.

Wallingford Library to present CT Money School Series for Seniors

Wallingford Public Library and the Agency on Aging of South Central Connecticut present a series of Connecticut Money School Workshops in August. Each workshop begins at 6:30 p.m. and lasts one hour. All are welcome to attend any or all of the sessions. Advance registration is appreciated.

Wednesday, August 12th the first session, Understanding a Reverse Mortgage will discuss how a reverse mortgage works. The workshop will cover the basic concepts and terminology, and the advantages and disadvantages of a reverse mortgage.

Thursday, August 13th the second session, Understanding Medicare, will provide an understanding of how Medicare works and what it does and does not pay for.

Tuesday, August 25th the final session will focus on consumer debt and money management with a workshop entitled, Managing Your Debt.

The CT Money School is a project of the Connecticut Association for Human Services and five non-profit partners. The Agency on Aging is a non-profit organization providing social services and nutrition programs designed to meet the needs of those age 60 and older. Book Seller Accepting Donations

The Wallingford Public Library’s used book store, the Book Seller accepts gently used paperback and hardcover books, DVDs, audio books, and videos. Donations can be dropped off at the Library’s Information Desk. Larger donations and boxes of donated material are accepted by appointment on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please call the library in advance to notify the staff if you have boxes to drop off. Please note, the following items cannot be accepted: encyclopedias, text books, and magazines including National Geographic. The Book Seller is located in the lower level lobby of the library. Summer hours are as follows: Mondays from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All proceeds from the Book Seller benefit the Wallingford Public Library Association.
