Effective immediately, the Mini-Bus Transportation Program at the Senior Center is pleased to announce two major changes in the mini-bus transportation services that we provide. We are now serving people under age 60 with disabilities which prevent them from riding the regular fixed route bus. Applications for disabled passengers under age 60 are now available in the Mini-Bus Office or by calling 237-3338. We will also continue to provide rides for any Meriden resident age 60 and over. Also, we have expanded our transportation destinations to include more shopping, banks and pharmacies in addition to medical appointments, the Senior Center, Casa Boricua and convalescent home visiting. Our expanded service is offered to Meriden residents age 60 and over and to local residents with disabilities. For further information or to make a reservation please call Dispatcher Claire Bartholomew 24 hours in advance of your ride at 237-3338. There is no fee for this service which is supported by funding from the City of Meriden, the Connecticut Department of Transportation and the Agency on Aging of South Central Connecticut. Closed Circuit Television Demonstration

A Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) magnifies printed material onto a monitor. Reading your own mail, medication label, writing checks and letters, and enjoying photographs are examples of things that may be possible again with the use of a CCTV. Please call 265-7753 to register.

Mayor’s Corner - Wallingford

Dear Friends:
Make no bones about it, the month of June is a time of solemn ceremony and celebratory anticipation. The phrase “make no bones about it” comes to us from Medieval times when dinner frequently consisted of a pot of stew which cooled for hours. The stew consisted of anything that was edible including bits of meat, potatoes, carrots, turnips and bones. The bones might be of animal, fowl or fish cartilage. Those who ate this stew had to be careful not to be surprised by a bone while eating. A person making an objection or offering criticism was known to be finding bones.

In June we have a wonderful collection of events beginning with Memorial Day commemorations and ending with graduations from high schools and universities. We solemnly remember those who have died to ensure that we enjoy the blessings and values symbolized by the Flag of the United States of America and celebrated on June 14th.

The community swells with pride in recognition of our graduates and our hope for their continued success in school or careers. June also, of course, heralds the beginning of summer and the fun and vacations so many people enjoy.

Make no bones about it, June is a great month.

Sincerely,
William W. Dickinson, Jr. - Mayor

Mayor’s Corner - Meriden

Dear Friends,

I hope all is well with you and your family.

Congratulations to Judge James Abrams. The City of Meriden is proud to have one of our own serving as a judge for the State of Connecticut. I would also like to congratulate Meriden’s two newest Eagle Scouts, Chad Cardillo and Nicholas Racca. A special congratulations to all the DARE graduates. Officer Cirillo, Sargeant Nesci, and the Police Department have an excellent working relationship with our schools and our children benefit from it. As judges in the Hicks Speaking contest, Councilwoman Santiago and I were most impressed by our talented students.

The City recently received three grants totaling 600,000 dollars from the DEP to help clean up brownfields in the City of Meriden. By continuing to utilize current development areas and remediating blighted sites the City of Meriden will be able to continue our economic growth. It is exciting to see the Walgreens and Lowes projects underway and Comfort Suites open for business on East Main Street. The property owners did a fantastic job with renovations and now this hotel is a top notch facility. After participating in the Business After Hours ribbon cutting ceremony at the hotel, I can’t say enough about all the improvements and the new rooms. Also, Valencia is in the process of getting ready for their grand opening at their new location in the Lowes Plaza. I am appreciative of the developer’s efforts to retain current tenants as new tenants and retail outlets join our city.

The action on South Broad Street has included grand openings at Cold Stone Creamery, Starbucks, and FedEx/Kinkos. At the Business and Learning Center, behind the new plaza, Post University has begun offering college classes. Stop by and visit our new stores and college.

June also brings a host of civic and community events. The Flag Day Ceremony, Special Day for Special People, and the Relay for Life Celebration will be taking place throughout the month. We must also not forget our graduation ceremonies at Maloney, Platt, Wilcox, and Middlesex. Congratulations to all the graduates and best of luck in your future endeavors. In closing I would like to wish my dad, Jack, and all fathers, a Happy Father’s Day!

Thank you for your continued support!

Sincerely, Mark D. Benigni - Mayor
